Humanities Through Drama: Harnessing the Power of Play (Members)
This practical course is mainly intended for class teachers of the Primary age range including Foundation Stage Teachers.
Theatre has its roots in child's play. By tapping into these roots which are deep both in the natural development of the individual and in the development of the human race, you will gain some insight into why some things work and some things struggle, especially at the start of lessons.
Problem solving through physical games, talk in pairs, hot seating and role-play will extend concepts in History and Geography. Pupils can revisit their drama to analyse the special subject vocabulary and skills they have used. Teachers can take this time to evaluate their pupils’ knowledge.
This workshop provides some of these simple basics of early play which can swiftly inform planning and also help engage classes within Geography and History lessons.
Carol Olivier is an experienced Primary teacher, recently enjoying being a classroom teacher in key stage 1 after long management experience. She has used her specialist drama teaching skills through all the curriculum areas and full age range of the primary school.
Amanda Kipling is currently the leader of the PGCE Drama Course at Goldsmiths College. She is the author of 'The Play's The Thing' a chapter in Drama To Inspire and a Trustee of London Drama.

STEP is a borough-wide partnership linking the theatre community and education and youth sector in the London Borough of Southwark. STEP aims to equalise, extend and deepen the theatre and drama experience of all young people living in Southwark through the development of strategic partnerships between schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations. STEP's objective is to work closely with Southwark schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations to develop creative approaches to learning and provide innovative projects which stimulate children and young people's personal development and contribute to their educational attainment.
